GYNECOLOGICAL TESTIMONIAL

Patient Thanks Surgeon for Saving Her From Being a ‘Lost Cause’

Forty-three-year-old Stephanie Venable walked out of her gynecologist’s office feeling desperate. She touched her abdomen, which was tender and swollen to the size of an eight month-old pregnancy. But it wasn’t a baby Stephanie was carrying – it was a large mass of fibroids, and she had just learned that, because she was overweight, her only option to have them removed was to undergo a complicated surgery that would force her to miss nine weeks of work. For Stephanie, who had a demanding job and cared for her aging mother, being in recovery for that long was not an option.

Stephanie was first diagnosed with fibroids during a routine gynecological exam in 2009, three years earlier. Having never experienced side effects from having extra tissue growing inside of her, she was shocked at the news.
“I really had no idea what was going on, I thought it was cancer,“ Stephanie said. “They talked about the possibility of having surgery, but I thought I could just lose weight and they would melt away.“ Stephanie started an exercise routine and added flaxseed and iodine supplements to her diet, after reading advice from online testimonials. But her fibroids continued to grow, and she finally had to admit that surgery was imminent. Unfortunately, by the time she made that decision, her fibroids and uterus had grown too large for less invasive procedures. According to her gynecologist, Stephanie was a “lost cause“ and only eligible for traditional surgery.
Searching for a second opinion, Stephanie was eventually referred to Saji Jacob, MD, an OBGYN and Robotic Surgeon on staff with SSM Maternity Care and the SSM Robotic Surgery Institute at DePaul Health Center. Within the week of her first appointment, she had her consultation and was on the schedule to have her fibroids removed with the daVinci Robotic Surgical System.
“I walked into Dr. Jacob’s office and he said ‘What took you so long to come here’,“ Stephanie said. “I couldn’t believe it. He said that with this procedure, I could return to work in just a few days.“ Once he started the procedure, Dr. Jacob was shocked at what he found. “The extra tissue weighed more than 3.5 pounds and I couldn’t even count them all. Fortunately, we were able to remove each one with the robot,“ he said.
Six days later, Stephanie returned to work with no pain and no fibroids. She is so happy with the outcome that she now speaks out about her experience. “I just hope that other women in my situation – overweight and in denial – have a chance at this procedure. It really is a life changer,“ she said.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS

“Hello, my name is Cindy and I’m 4 weeks post op from a robotic assisted hysterectomy. Dr. Jacob has been my gynecologist for around 7 years and it came to a point where a hysterectomy was necessary for me. My experience has made me an advocate of minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery. This type of surgery offers less pain, faster recovery time and shorter hospital stay. I was walking the same day of surgery.
I’m thankful for Dr. Jacob’s compassion and kindness and to his staff Maria and Jaqueline for having patience in answering my many questions. I’m also thankful the St. Louis area has Dr. Jacob so he can help other women.”

“I’m an African American who at the age of 40 was told that I have fibroids. There were about 10 of them ranging in sizes from a small pea to a golf ball. My OB/GYN offered me literature on the Mirena Contraception but I was not interested in that, so she stated as long as pain is tolerable nothing had to be done. However, as the years passed the pain became very uncomfortable and at last annual exam we discussed a hysterectomy. My uterus had increased to the size of a 32-36 week pregnant woman. This is why the pain was so uncomfortable. I would bleed so much that 2 pads every 4 hours could not handle the flow. I started using POISE pads to handle the flow. My OB/GYN gave me the name of 2 doctors. I chose Dr. Jacob. When I came to his office, I was ‘IMPRESSED’ with the staff! It felt like a FAMILY which made me feel good and at that moment I knew I was in the right place! Dr. Jacob told me I was his ‘MOST COMPLEX’ case due to the uterus now being 37-40 weeks in size. He assured me that he would have to get inside of my body to determine if it will be done with a robot and… It was a TRUE SUCCESS! I would highly recommend Dr. Jacob. He is the ‘BEST’!!

In 2009 I was unemployed, waiting to hear if my short-sale on my condo would be approved and getting ready to have surgery on my left foot. I went for my annual well woman exam and was told my uterus felt large and would need to have and an ultrasound. Then, in late September 2009, after the ultrasound I was told I had fibroids on my uterus. I saw DaVinci on the Internet but didn’t know if it was something that could be performed on me. My Gyn continued to monitor my fibroids on ultrasounds. Then on a friends suggestion I see her gyn because she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer many years ago and always felt it was her gyn that found it early enough that she went on to successfully recover. Unfortunately when I saw my friend gyn I left being told nothing could be done about my fibroids but a hysterectomy. However my fibroid was too large above my belly button to perform da Vinci. I went back to my gyn and in the late Fall of 2011 she ordered another ultrasound and said the fibroids were many and getting a little larger. She said for me to come back for another ultrasound in 6 months to monitor how fast fibroids were growing. My gyn also said my thyroid was low hence the struggle for me to lose weight. In January 2012 I went to a new MD for a physical and get help for my thyroid. I was able to get proper prescription dosage to help my low thyroid. I took myself off birth control in April hoping it would help shrink fibroids and along with my thyroid treatment I could start losing weight and that would also help shrink my fibroids. I cancelled my 6 month ultrasound appt. thinking weight loss would show a positive effect on my fibroids. I then had ultrasound in August but my fibroids were larger regardless of my weightless. My gyn told me about Dr. Jacobs success performing da Vinci on women with large uterus. Long story short Sure enough Dr Jacobs performed nothing less than a miracle a removed my uterus the size equivalent to a 34-week pregnant woman!!
