1. MINIMAL ACCESS SURGERY (MIS)

  • Throughout the last century, surgeons have strived to improve their treatment outcome thus providing better and advanced care to patients by technological innovations and adaptations from other scientific fields. The best example is the introduction of laparoscopy which was first performed by Dr. Hans Christian Jacobaeus of Sweden in 1910 (thoracoscopy). This technological advancement has the potential of reducing pain and scarring associated with open laparotomy.

2. ROBOTIC SURGERY

  • The history of robotics in surgery begins with the Puma 560, a robot used in 1985 by Kwoh et al to perform neurosurgical biopsies with greater precision.6,11 Three years later, Davies et al performed a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) using the Puma 560.12 This system eventually led to the development of PROBOT, a robot designed specifically for transurethral resection of the prostate. The Probot was first used for TURP by Dr. Wickham and group in 1988 at Guy’s Hospital London.

3. PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE SURGERY

  • Prolapse comes from Latin ‘procidere’ which means “to fall”. Prolapse occurs when there is a defect in the pelvic floor sufficient to allow one or more of the pelvic organs to fall through it. It is a common gynecological problem which, although not life-threatening, can severely affect the quality of life of many women.

4. HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

  • Hormone replacement medications are given to women who no longer produce their own hormones within their body. Menopausal women usually take estrogen to help with symptoms such as hot flashes. They may also receive progestin, a man made version of progesterone, which helps with dryness, itching, burning and painful intercourse.
