Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery

Surgeon looking down

Prolapse comes from Latin ‘procidere’ which means “to fall”. Prolapse occurs when there is a defect in the pelvic floor sufficient to allow one or more of the pelvic organs to fall through it. It is a common gynecological problem which, although not life-threatening, can severely affect the quality of life of many women, especially during their golden years. There are many causes for prolapse, of which the most common cause is child birth injury, especially forceps delivery.  The most common symptom is the protrusion of the tissue through the vagina and pressure symptoms.  Incontinence of bladder and/or bowel may occur.

The management of prolapse can be a non-surgical intervention like the use of pessaries or definitive surgery.  Vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair is the most popular corrective surgery. If the patient suffers from urinary incontinence, a sling procedure like TOT can be done along with the hysterectomy.
